Before approving a survey program, ask what would make the team question a reading.
A plotted wellpath can look precise even when the measurements behind it carry uncertainty. Measured depth, inclination and azimuth help calculate wellbore position between survey stations; they do not remove the uncertainty around that position. For a drilling engineer reviewing target placement or separation from neighboring wells, understanding that distinction is part of understanding the plan.
One useful pre-job conversation is about the selected survey tool code. Does it represent the equipment and the way it will be used? What quality checks support its assumptions? ISCWSA puts responsibility on users and service providers to establish that fit, including when a generic model is selected. A familiar model name alone cannot answer those questions.
At Radar Directional Services, our services include pulse and EM MWD, with anti-collision work included in our well planning and engineering offering. Our pulse MWD offering includes inclination, azimuth and gamma ray measurements. We welcome the conversation about how those measurement needs fit the directional scope of your project, alongside the challenges your team expects downhole.
Bring Ben Davis and the Radar team your well plan and the questions you want resolved before the job. Discussing who reviews a questionable survey, what information they need and how the decision is documented gives the team something practical to work from. What survey-quality question would you want settled before your next well?
